Jack came to New York for immigration law and met Evelyn the same season. The work was steady. The standard wasn't. It took him about a week to notice that the bar everyone worked to was lower than the one he'd set for himself.

THE PARTY

At a holiday party, one of Jack's colleagues summed up the whole industry without meaning to: "Either way, you bill them for the time." The collective laughter was immediate. That was the part Evelyn couldn't ignore: not the line, the laughter. A room full of people who'd subconsciously agreed that "good enough" was good enough. She looked at Jack and understood something she hadn't had words for yet: he was never going to belong here, and that was the best thing about him.

MARRIED

Six months after they met, they married. The Monday after the honeymoon, on the couch in Jack's apartment, he finally said out loud what he'd been building in his head since his first week on the job. "If we do this together, I know it'll work." Evelyn had spent years pouring herself into work that didn't deserve it. This was the first thing that did.

By 10 a.m. that following Monday, they'd both quit. No guarantee of anything, just the one man Evelyn had met who cared more about the people than the check, willing to walk away on faith that God would provide. Omega Counsel started that morning.
